La crise du COVID-19, au-delà des impacts sanitaires avérés et économiques à venir tout aussi inquiétants, nous permet de mettre en lumière certaines faiblesses de notre mode de vie. Entre les dépendances industrielles (textiles, équipements, pharmaceutiques, etc.) que nous avons avec les gros producteurs mondiaux tels la Chine et les Etats-Unis et l’effet Streisand des réseaux sociaux sur les populations ayant pour conséquences des effets de paniques, il y a beaucoup de sujets de société sur lesquels les débats ne font que commencer.

Adopter l’IA ne s’achète pas, cela se cultive

La notion d’intelligence artificielle (IA) date des années 1950 quand Alain Turing, à la suite de ces travaux de cryptanalyse durant la seconde guerre mondiale, soumet l’idée que les machines ainsi créées pour résoudre des problèmes, deviendront à terme capable de “penser par elles-mêmes”. C’est de cette idée d’ailleurs qu’il présentera son fameux test éponyme, visant à tester une IA sur sa faculté à imiter la conversation humaine.

Hey, « Agile »​? Welcome « Dexterity »​!

First researches around iterative and incremental methods can be track back to 1930’s supported by Walter Shewhart and William Edwards Deming works. In the 50’s, theirs concepts have been used initially for software development at IBM and Motorola, but theirs documentations really started in 80’s to conclude with the publication of the « Manifesto for Agile Development ».

In early 90’s, agile software development paradigms started to be used in organizations described as an « agile business management model ». The main idea is to help organisational structures to accept and adapt themselves to changes as part of their ongoing operations, sometime linked to « Lean Management ».

However I have the feeling we overtaxed Agile concepts too much and sometimes in wrong places. Why? I guess because agile methodologies are still slow compare to market/business evolution.

How do I boost my memory


Memory is one of the best but most complex tool any individual has.

It helps us to use pictures of our experiences in order to act in the present. However, as any other tools, it needs practice to maximize its potential. Two characteristics of the memory are helpful to improve in our day-to-day life:

  • Its size: how much information are we able to keep/store?
  • Its accessibility: how easy can we store/retrieve information?

Austerity: don’t forget to spent some of your result efforts for yourself

cost-control-and-reduction-17-638« Austerity » is the current famous word we are hearing from several sources: from politics, economic consultant agencies, at work, etc.

Like any cycle, economy has top and down situations: when everything is working well we are spending money out of the windows, but when it is becoming rare then we are suffering cutting cost all around us.


Have an idea? Draft it, sketch it and keep it!


I’m from those guys who think everyone has a hidden part of ingenuity. Ingenuity is part of human being which is why humanity is at the current level of evolution. You don’t need to be a genius to be clever. Our brain constantly comparing hundreds of scenarios per second in order to make sure we’ll do the right thing on a mechanical point of view.

The biggest challenge is to realize this ingeniousness and keep it ready for any potential circumstances.

How I manage operational risks – Maintenance level versus risk


As per my regional role at work supporting several different business units, I do not own any budget and thus do not own risk responsibility while it comes down to renew maintenance or refresh Telecom devices. However my biggest challenge is to make sure budget owner clearly understand potential risk behind the final decision.
I do split IT device lifecycle in two activities: « Operating » & « Keep Environment Current »
I will cover the first one as per this post and second in another one later.

Recognition @ work


As Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is trying to describe, all humans have essential needs that must be met through the course of their life. It starts from the basic physiological needs to keep survive (air, food, water, etc.) to end at self-actualization level where we have full control of our self both, personal, social and professional speaking.

Understanding such hierarchy will help manager to keep their teams motivated and engaged. To reach that goal more and more companies are implementing recognition program as part of their HR model. However to make it work recognition need to follow some rules which can’t be applied the same way depending on the country, culture, and individuals.


Right to do wrong


That infographic speaks by itself: all historical genius had failed several times before succeeding. As the French Canadian Jean- François Vézina, psychologist and writer also said: « If the bacteria had not made a mistake, we would not be here! »

The power of failing or doing wrong is from my point of view even more important than doing good and succeeding. Indeed, for all failures you will encounter to reach a goal you will learn something new which will be a step forward that goal and will be even reuse for reaching another one later.


Benefits of writing/replying Farewell E-mails


I recently received three farewell e-mails in just 2 weeks from colleague leaving the company for new challenges in their career. We may have all gotten such communications announcing career changes and providing contact details to stay in touch.

I just realized the personal boost benefit of getting such emails, because the sender is not only telling you what he is going to do (or not to do) and giving you his personal email contact. Indeed most of the time you already known all this well before you got this Farewell. However such missive is very confidential in two ways:

  1. the sender was never obliged to write such communication but he did it
  2. the sender methodically select recipients and you have been chosen

Basically your ex-colleague did an optional effort to let you know you are part of its own network and appreciated working with you.

Until now I used to reply to those communications by using a generic template and giving my personal email in return, but this time I decided to replied and this where the mutual emotional boost is starting.

Indeed, even if you’ve been only few people receiving this Farewell E-mail, the communication still generic enough to make sure everyone reading it feels involved. But once you decide to reply, it is becoming a one-to-one communication where you can go further in details and also « return the thank you back ». By doing it you confirm that you acknowledge your good relationship with him but also giving a personal feedback on why you want to stay in touch, and you will probably get a reply back in that sense too: on the three email I replied I got two writing replies and one callback which made my year!
